Motor Industry Code boss Chris Mason says the trade must decide the future of the scheme

CODE boss Chris Mason says the trade must decide the future of the Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair for itself.

The IMI recently confirmed that has been in discussions with Motor Codes – the company that runs the Code – about how it may or may not be developed in the future.

A spokesman for the IMI said: “The IMI and Motor Codes are looking at areas of common interest between both the ATA scheme and the Code and both organisations are meeting regularly to progress this.”

Those who do not support the code often point out the fact it is voluntary and does not require specific qualifications from technicians to become a member.

Chris stressed that if the Code did change or develop in the future, its future would be decided via consultation with members, consumer and trade bodies before changes were made.

“The sensible approach is to evaluate the options and the expectations of the industry bodies and subscribers and move forward from an agreed position.

“This isn’t about what I think is the right thing to do,” added Chris. “It’s about us preparing some sensible steps forward and creating some alignment between the motorists and the industry about who and what a responsible business is.”
