Find out how your customers could save £2,575 by booking in for a service
THE MAN behind the Motor Industry Service and Repair Code (MISRC) is urging motorists to remember the costly consequences of delaying routine services. Chris Mason, a former technician and garage manager, says that at a time of economic uncertainty, motorists may need reminding that average repair bills can easily outweigh the cost of a service.
“Although the average cost of a basic car service is around £125, average repair costs of many makes and models indicate that it is money well spent,” said Chris (pictured above right).
“Failing to have a car maintained correctly means people run the risk of being hit with significant repair costs.” The MISRC said garages could use the following figures could be used to remind motorists of the importance of service work:
- Exchange engine - £2,575
- Cylinder head gasket - £520
- Radiator - £430
- Water pump - £240
While the number of cars on the road hasn't changed, recent figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show the new car market has fallen for the past five consecutive months.
The figures show motorists are hanging on to their cars for longer, meaning significant benefits for those who use a regular service programme to maintain the residual value of their car.
“In these tricky financial times, the temptation may be for drivers to delay or even ignore routine maintenance on their car because the modern vehicle tends to be so reliable – but that could work out more expensive in the long run,” said Chris, who is now director of Motor Codes, the company that administers the MISRC.
“If they don’t carry out scheduled maintenance or fail to have repairs carried out promptly, they could eventually end up paying more.”
