ATA database helps drivers seek out technicians' skills

A SURVEY of motorists has shown most have little grasp of the issues affecting the technical up-keep of their cars.

More than half of the 1,338 people asked said they didn’t know when their next service was due and 9% said they never checked tyre pressures between services.

The news comes after a database of all ATA technicians went live, to let drivers search for the workplace of their nearest registered tech. To find out more, simply go to www.okwithata.com.

Many drivers questioned in the survey said they were confused by the numerous technical terms in use today.

Nearly a third of those asked said they had no idea what the initials EBD, VVT and TCS meant when used to refer to electronic brakeforce distribution, variable valve timing and traction control systems.

The survey was commissioned on behalf of the ATA scheme as part of its work to create consumer awareness of the quality symbol through the “You know you’re OK with ATA” catchphrase.

Snap-on Tools is just one of the companies supporting the ATA campaign by distributing 80,000 fliers to independent workshops around the UK over the coming months.

The fliers are designed to both promote ATA to garages and encourage consumers to seek out assurances of quality in service and repair work carried out on their cars.
