Find out the Right To Repair Campaign's bid to win driver support
THOUSANDS of posters, leaflets and DVDs warning motorists of the threats to the independent aftermarket are making their way to garages around the country.
The promotional material is currently being sent to distributors and motor factors throughout the UK, courtesy of the Right To Repair Campaign. Campaign members hope garages will use the material to win the support of customers.
The R2RC is now taking its message direct to motorists with an on-going presence at the British International Motor Show in London.
R2RC staff are joining employees of companies who support the campaign to give out leaflets and inform drivers about the threats posed by potential non-renewal of Block Exemption Regulations.
One of the leaflets tells drivers: “Your car. Your choice. Your loss. Currently, you have the right to service and repair your vehicle wherever you wish. But, in 2010, that right could be removed.”
It goes on to give example quotes, suggesting the problems that might occur if the independent aftermarket does not have free access to technical data. These include:
- “We’ve sorted the problem, sir. That’ll be double what you might have paid at an independent car repairer . . ”
- “Here are your keys, sir – all taken car of. Have a safe 40 mile journey home . . .”
- “Your car’s all sorted, sir. However, I’m afraid the independent garage industry is a complete write off . . .”
Speaking from the Motor Show yesterday (Wednesday July 23rd), campaign chairman Jim Mazza said the message was hitting home with drivers.
“People are obviously coming to look at cars but when they see the leaflets and look at the front page it generates interest,” he said.
“They tend to walk past when they first get the leaflet but come back once they’ve had a second look.”
