Industry misses targets

Three quarters of all new cars sold fail to meet EU targets for reducing CO2 emissions, a new survey has revealed. The survey was carried out by the European Federation for Transport and Environment. The Brussels-based pressure group claims that only Fiat, Citroen, Renault, Ford and Peugeot are on course to reach the target figure of no more than 140 grams of CO2 per kilometre by 2008. Average emissions currently stand at 161 g/km. Nissan, Suzuki, Mazda, Audi, Volvo, BMW and Volkswagen are accused of reducing emissions by, in some cases, less than half of the rate needed to meet the voluntary commitment, which was made with the EU in 1998 by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.
